(printed in the July 1997 issue of "The Rag Times"). Many of the contemporary syncopated compositions on this CD bear some similarity to ragtime. As reviewer Mike Schmitz wrote, "In its departure from marching, dancing center of ragtime, Terra Verde is less segmented and more through-composed than most rags. As with the work of Donald Ashwander, it utilizes some elements of modern classical composition while anchored to the basics of the 19th century musical structure". The idea of combining elements of ragtime with other music forms has been around for almost a century. The success of such hybrid works has always depended upon the talent of the composers.
