Jim began composing and arranging while in high school, and continues to do so to this day. He founded Bayside Music Press in 1995, as a vehicle to publish custom arrangements written for the "South Valley Brass", and that catalog has grown to include compositions and arrangements by other composers and arrangers as well. At the urging of Oleg Mezjuev, Jim also began composing ragtime in 1997, and MIDI files of some of those pieces may be found on this site.

The Bayside Music Press website at http://www.baysidemusicpress.com became a reality in the fall of 2002, and the Bayside Catalog now includes several hundred titles published by Bayside Music Press and several other small publishers. There are Bayside Publications of rags by Jim O'Briant and Bill Rowland, and rags from other publishers as well. There are also many instrumental editions of rags from several publishers.
