- Jelly Roll Morton, the Library of Congress Recordings, Vol. 1
(Recorded by Alan Lomax)
- Notes from the CD insert: Jelly Roll Morton, the first great jazz artist, made these
Library of Congress recordings in 1938, at the behest of Alan Lomax of the Archive of Folk
Song. In them, Morton performs not only his own music, singing and playing the piano, but
recreates the styles and repertoires - folk tunes, blues, marches, ragtime, opera he heard
during his Storyville days and later wide travels and colorful life. Collected here are the
musical performances from this series, for the first time complete, uncensored, and
pitch-corrected to compensate for problems with the original recording equipment.
